More than a century ago in the Amazon forest, a long story which began under the leadership of a man named Chico Mendes, had repercussions that travelled much further than the foret‘s limits and continues to this day.
This activist drew world attention to discuss the social and environmental impact of Amazonia‘s devastation. Through a peaceful resistance movement to block deflorestation, he united rubber tappers, Indians and environmentalists, using only dialogue as a weapon.
Chico Mendes was honored by the United Nations for his efforts to protect the environment. In 1988 he was assassinated at his home.
