The largest volume of hours negotiated in the last few years, partnerships signed with the main TV operators, and an increase in scope for its international channel. It‘s in this setting that TV Globo, one of the most important producers of content in Latin America, starts 2009 in the United States.
During the last year, Globo TV International, the sector that represents the Brazilian company overseas, further reinforced its presence in the North American market, where it operates in 2 distinct areas: the International Sales Department, responsible for the distribution of products that make up the diversified portfolio of the company; and the TV Globo Internacional, the first Brazilian channel of the genre to be transmitted via satellite to 114 countries on 5 continents.
The participation of the Brazilian distributor keeps growing each year in the United States. Since 2006, its presence grew more than 70% in licensed hours.
Content diversification is the key to new business
2008 was a year that marked the consolidation of the distributor‘s growth in the US, one of the main markets in the world. "We closed the year with a new record. All in all, close to more than 3.000 thousand hours of content were negotiated, the fruit of our strategy to offer a diversified portfolio to the market, with documentaries, miniseries, telenovelas, specials, comedy series and drama" affirmed the director of the International Sales department at TV Globo International, Raphael Corrêa Netto.
Currently, 12 productions from TV Globo make up the programming of various channels, with a special highlight on the telenovelas - on air with 10 networks. And the number of broadcasters that show the Brazilian company‘s work is also growing each year.
In addition to the miniseries, telenovelas, series, documentaries, game show formats (one of the company‘s new items for the 2009 edition of Natpe) and specials, Globo TV International is betting on a new negotiation model, which will take its long experience in creation, original story production and high technical and artistic quality to the 4 corners of the planet. Since the start of 2008, the distributor has dedicated itself strongly to the development of international co-productions. And the company chose the North American market for the kickoff.
The first project of the cooperation is the new version of ‘The Clone‘, an exclusive adaptation directed at the Hispanic market in the US and that will be exhibited on the Telemundo Network. "With this coproduction, we can revive the great success of the original version of the telenovela, which was sold to 90 countries, and the North American market has a great acceptance for this type of product." concluded Corrêa Netto.
Varied programming and in Portuguese
With more than 500 thousand premium subscribers all over the world, TV Globo Internacional also has the US as one of its main markets and further reinforces the presence of the Brazilian producer in North America.
Currently, the channel is watched by approximately in 100 thousand homes in the big American cities, where subscribers who haven‘t given up on the idea of diversified programming transmitted in Portuguese reside. "The US was always the favorite destination for the majority of Brazilians who searched for a better life overseas. There are close to 1.5 Million immigrants who came from Brazil, making the US a strategic region for our business." affirms the director of TV Globo Internacional, Marcelo Spinola.
Always with the objective of expanding its presence in the country even more, and guaranteeing the high level of excellence of its broadcasts, TV Globo Internacional counts on important partnerships. In this manner, the broadcaster‘s signal arrives to the homes of its subscribers - via cable or satellite - through the main operators in the US. Cablevision, Comcast, Dishnetwork, Directv, RCN, Atlantic Broadband, and Full Channel are the companies responsible for taking the diversified programming (news, live sports, telenovelas, miniseries, children‘s programs and varieties) to subscribers all over the US.
