Love, conflict, success and excess. Full of highs and lows. This was the intense life of Brazilian singer Maysa Monjardim Matarazzo (1936-1977). Talent, high artistic quality and plenty of emotion: these elements together compose the mini-series "Maysa - When the heart sings", the latest production from TV Globo. Globo International are hoping the miniseries will be a good for success in the 2009 edition of Natpe. During the event, the distributor, known internationally for its technical and artistic quality, will further reinforce its strategy of offering the market a diversified portfolio of products. This year, apart from telenovelas, documentaries, series and miniseries, the Brazilian company will offer its game-show formats for the first time.
Written by Manoel Carlos (‘Páginas da Vida’) and directed by Jayme Monjardim (director of ‘O Clone’ and the only son of the singer), "Maysa - When the heart sings" will be broadcast in Brazil after the 5th of January. The 10 chapters tell the story of a woman who lived intensely, in an eternal search for love, for life and for her own realisation. A woman moved by motives of the heart, and that many times, was guided by emotion more than by reason. Everything is laid bare in a production of the highest level: the dreams, the success, the loves, the family, the crises, the depression...
Filmed entirely in high definition, "Maysa - When the heart sings", combines fiction with archive footage to tell the story of one of the great mythic singers of Brazilian music, who had her life cut short by a tragic car accident, when she was only 40 years old. The work had 98% of its scenes filmed in external locations, in historic buildings that portray the high society of the 50s, 60s and 70s, which reinforces the realistic treatment of the production.
As backdrops for the miniseries, the city of Venice and emblematic scenes of Rio de Janeiro, like the Palácio Laranjeiras, the hotel Copacabana Palace, Hotel Glória, Casa Julieta de Serpa, MAM, Palácio Gustavo Capanema, Palácio Itamaraty and the Reitoria da UFRJ. The photography direction is under the control of Affonso Beato, who worked with Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar on the film ‘Todo Sobre Mi Madre’, in 1999.
Launch
For the launch of "Maysa - When the heart sings" in Brazil, TV Globo prepared a gala feast, a celebration of Brazilian music. The location chosen was the Copacabana Palace, which on the night of 16th, received close to 400 guests, among those many singers and composers. The cast, made up mostly of actors established in the theatre, were also present at the party. In an emotional occasion, the space reproduced the ambiance of a house from the 60s, replete with a vintage television, which showed images of various moments of the singer‘s career.
